About Osawatomie:

Osawatomie is a city located in Miami County, Kansas, 61 miles (98 km) south by west of Kansas City. It derives its name from two streams near by, the Osage and Potawatomie. In 1900, 4,101 people lived in Osawatomie; in 1910, 4,046. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,645. Osawatomie was chartered in 1883 and in 1890 became a second-class city. The commission form of government was adopted in 1914.

Osawatomie was one of the free-State settlements made by the Emigrant Aid Society in 1855. On August 30, 1856, abolitionist John Brown lead the defense against a pro-slavery invasion of the town. After he and his followers were dispersed, the town was almost completely demolished by the proslavery men. The oldest State insane hospital was constructed here, dating from 1866.

Osawatomie Geography:

Osawatomie is located at 38°30'6" North, 94°57'3" West (38.501650, -94.950799), along the Marais des Cygnes River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.6 km2 (4.5 mi2). 11.5 km2 (4.4 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.11% water.

Osawatomie Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,645 people, 1,781 households, and 1,130 families residing in the city. The population density is 403.9/km2 (1,045.0/mi2). There are 1,947 housing units at an average density of 169.3/km2 (438.0/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 92.21% White, 4.16% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 2.15% from two or more races. 2.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,781 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.9% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,104, and the median income for a family is $37,172. Males have a median income of $30,650 versus $23,043 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,353. 12.9% of the population and 10.9% of families are below the poverty line. 16.5% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
